INTELLIGENCE IS THE TORCH OF WISDOM

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is a private, not-for-profit organization whose purpose is to provide assistance and support through established programs in local communities throughout the world. Since its founding, more than 200,000 women have joined the organization.

The organization is a sisterhood of predominantly Black, college educated women. The sorority currently has 1,000 collegiate and alumnae chapters located in the United States, England, Japan, Germany, the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, the Bahamas, Jamaica and the Republic of Korea.

THE TASK:

The sorority desired to establish a blended learning program to certify alumnae members, who desire to serve as advisors to collegiate chapters.

The new program was expected to cause uneasiness amongst members, so it was vital that it be user-friendly. Additionally, it needed the ability to scale in case the sorority expanded course offerings in the future.

THE SOLUTION:

I was tasked with leading the project, which consisted of three components:

  1. Developing a suite of courses;

  2. Setting up a Learning Management System (LMS) and serving as its administrator; and

  3. Providing system training for 7 trainers and a support staff of 10 via webinars and training manuals.

After a successful pilot program, the sorority determined its needs would be better met by migrating to a more robust LMS. I developed the new iteration using Moodle and created accompanying training materials.
